Rice

In Arunachal Pradesh, the people are more focused on their main food rice. Cooking rice in the traditional Nyishi style is very popular in Arunachal Pradesh. The Nyishi community is the largest inherited community in Arunachal Pradesh. In Nyishi tradition they cook rice in a hollow bamboo with hot coal. This way the rice gives a different flavor and delicious taste.






Momo

Pika Pila

Pika Pila is a popular food item in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a type of pickle made by Apatani tribes. Apatani tribes live in Ziro, the mysterious state in Arunachal Pradesh. The pickle is made by using pork fat, bamboo shoots and adding the flavor of chili. It is very good in taste but not very spicy. It is a must-try whenever you are on your Arunachal Tour.


Lukter

Lukter is a simple dish of dry meat with chili flakes or Bhut Jolokia. The recipe of Lukter is the dried meat is grilled with hot king chili. It is a traditional side dish and eaten with rice in Arunachal Pradesh.



Pehak

Pehak is an Assamese dish. The recipe of Pehak is made by use of fermented Soya bean and King chilly. In this cuisine, the king chili is used as the main ingredient. This is also used as a side dish with rice. The pickle is hot and very spicy that gives the rice a very unique hot flavor. Pehak is very popular among Assamese and Arunachalis.


Apong

Are you wondering about ‘Apong’? Well, Apong or Apo is another name for rice beer. It is a traditional drink of Arunachal Pradesh. The Mishing tribes that reside in Assam have certain customs. They drink this rice beer Apong in this custom. The cooked rice is laid out from the bamboo or banana leaves. Then E’pob mixed with the rice and put inside a drum for 6 days. After proper fermentation, the mixture is filtered and the liquid used as ‘Apong’.



Marua

Marua is a local beer of remote valley in northeastern state Arunachal Pradesh. Marua is also a beer made by millet. If you visit the remote valley in Arunachal Pradesh the local people will welcome you with this traditional beverage. It is better than coffee or tea.  To prepare Marua the complete fermentation process takes 15-20 days. The room where the fermentation process is done always remains clean.

Chura Sabji

You will love this simple and delicious food in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a curry made of fermented cheese which is made by either yak milk or cow milk. Few flakes of king chilly make this dish a delicious and spicy.
