in its daily platter. One of the variants of rice which is native and unique to
Bhutan is the Red Rice. This heirloom Red Rice
has traditionally been devoured by the Bhutanese as a component of their daily
diet. It is medium-grain rice which
has been grown in Bhutan since thousands of years, at nearly 9,000 feet
above sea level and irrigated with mineral-rich glacial waters. A tailor made
cereal grown from scratch, in a completely traditional way without the use of
any pesticides. The red colour comes from its anthocyanins, flavonoid and
antioxidants that impart a reddish hue.
Don’t be concerned about carbs as Bhutan’s Red Rice is packed with nutrients sure to enrich your health. Being gluten free, this becomes a great alternative for the generic brown rice which has a much longer cooking time. Catering to your health, the Red Rice is also rich in potassium and magnesium. It is believed to aid healthy blood, liver and cardiovascular functions among other functions. It has a distinctive earthy taste, a complex, nutty yet soft texture and a beautiful russet colour. It is very appetizing.
One of the most famous dishes prepared from this authentic
rice is ‘Zow’ or roasted rice which is a typical Bhutanese snack.
